HILLWOODS ACADEMY OBSERVES DELHI POLICE WEEK

Delhi Police organized an Awareness programme in Hillwoods Academy on 20 February, 2013 to make students aware of the working of the Police Force and how citizens can work in unison with the force for the safety of all.

With its motto as ‘Citizens First’ and message ‘With You, For you always’ ,the Delhi Police force since its inception in 1948 has been working for enforcement of law and order in the city.

Senior Police officials addressed the students apprising them about the different levels and functioning of Delhi Police force. Working round the clock, the police officials and constables through new techniques keep track of law breakers and those who flout the traffic rules. Students had certain queries which are well attended by the officials , A student asked that as per Section 144 citizens cannot protest at India Gate and by Section 63 A, online protests are not allowed , then how living in a democracy can we exercise our Right to Expression. The answer to the query was that the protestors wanted to go to President’s and P.M’s house but that cannot be allowed. People can go to Ramlila Maidan to protest.

Problems like less numbers of PCR vans low percentage of women in Police Force and delay in investigation procedure were some of the problems discussed by the students. In the end , Students realized that as citizens they need to be more vigilant and quick in their response and take police officials in confidence if they see any mishappening .Many students felt motivated to join police force and serve their state and nation.


VISIT TO HON'BLE CHIEF MINISTER'S HOUSE

The students of Hillwoods Academy visited Hon’ble Chief Minister of NCT Delhi’s House for a nature trail. Excited and thrilled, students with rapt attention listened to the environmentalist, Ms. Arti who apprised them of good cultivation methods practised like usage of organic manure, vermin composting etc. She also discussed in detail regarding importance of biodiversity and forest resources and suggested ways to conserve them.

Students learnt about ‘bats’ and various plant and tree species which are part of CM’s house.

Dr. Sabat, Senior Scientific Officer informed them that many trees are as old as 100 years.

Hon’ble Chief Minister, Smt. Sheila Dikshit provided students an opportunity to interact with her. They presented handmade cards with paper quilling to ma’am which were highly appreciated by her.

Study centre was also visited by the young learners who were informed in detail about native plants and animals found in Delhi region. Ms. Arti urged students to save the planet Earth and contribute in their small yet meaningful way for presentation of environment. A great learning experience, students came back well equipped with knowledge about biodiversity of their state and also motivated and devoted to the cause of Mother Earth.


ASTRONOMY CLUB SESSION

Astronomy club students of the school attended the session on safe solar viewing methods conducted by the SPACE .The session started with an interaction on facts about our solar system . Students were shown slides on the facts about the sun, the structure of the sun, they were explained about the chromospheres,photosphere,prominences. Students were told about the safe solar viewing methods like solar viewing goggles,using filters on telescope,projection method and pin hole camera. Students made their own pin hole camera to observe the sun. Students observed the sunspots with the help of telescope. Students enjoyed watching sun and the sunspots through various means.


BLOOD DONATION CAMP

Community Service Club of the school organized a Blood donation Camp on 19 January, 2013 in association with Red Cross Society of India in the school premises. The students’ volunteers urged the parents to donate blood and save precious lives. Enthusiasm and dedication of the club members motivated many parents to volunteers for a noble cause. Showing their gratification, the volunteers also presented ‘Thank You’ cards to the donors for their generosity.


WINTER CARNIVAL 'BEAT THE CHILL' 2012

Hillwoods Academy, Preet Vihar organised its Winter Carnival ‘Beat the Chill’ on Saturday, the 22 December 2012 for classes Nursery to V and Sunday, the 23 December 2012 for classes VI to XII in the school ground.

It was a fun filled fiesta marked with lots of gaiety, fervour and exuberance to celebrate ‘Christmas’ & usher in the New Year 2013 with a festive spirit. The daylong event, had complete entertainment with loads of games, like Nut stacker, Lucky Strike, Knock it and you are out etc. Christmas Bonanza with Christmas Carols and a sumptuous food court with mouth watering delicacies ranging from Continental to Chinese to North Indian had everyone enjoy to the fullest. The special game shows: Baby Show, Tambola, Mum Tum aur Hum, Stitch the Buttons and Musical Antakshri for grandparents added to fun and frolic. The ‘Just a Minute’ games was a hit with the parents and visitors.

Creativity of the students was displayed at its best in the stall. ‘Creative Wonders by Hillwoodians’. Christmas stall was an added attraction with lucky dip and delicious plum cakes.

Dancing to the tapping music, the students had a great time at the DJ floor. The joy rides brought joy and enjoyment to the young crowd. The main attraction was the “Raffle Draw’ on both the days with super duper gifts to carry home. The day ended on a note of happiness and excitement and with a belief that the coming year 2013 will indeed be a prosperous, great and a wonderful year for all.


VISIT TO BIOTECH LAB OF AMITY UNIVERSITY

Students of class XII (Biology) had visited biotech lab of Amity University to get an insight on techniques of biotechnology. Students observed plant tissue culture lab, learnt about recombinant DNA technology & techniques used in it. Had a glance over centrifuge and PCR. They got an opportunity to load the DNA sample in the wells of electro-phonetic gel. This visit was an enriching experience for the students.


VISIT TO PUSHPA GUJRAL SCIENCE CITY, KAPURTHALA, PUNJAB

An excellent opportunity was given to the senior students to visit the Science City at Kapurthala, Punjab and gain valuable information about scientific developments and inventions. The main attractions of the centre are Science Voyage Hall, Space Gallery, Science of Sports Gallery and amazing Living machines. Enjoying themselves at the Sports Gallery by doing Rock Climbing and also watching Laser Shows.

Exploration and noting down details and concepts behind each invention was mind stimulating and thought provoking for the students. The visit enhanced their scientific temper and reasoning ability and brought clarity into their learning about astronomical and scientific facts.

A novel experience for the students which was meaningful and highly knowledgeable for the young learners was strongly recommended by teachers and pupils who visited the Science City.


TECHNOFEST AT HILLWOODS ACADEMY

Hillwoods Academy, Delhi organized ‘Technofest’ on Saturday, 1 December 2012 in the school premises. The fest was graced by eminent personalities. A number of inter-school competitions were organized to test the technological and scientific acumen of young learners such as Sparkling Technies, Luck and logic, Geometrical attire, Picax, Calcimania, V cut express, Talk via chalk, Brain teaser etc. in which students of more than 20 schools participated with zest and fervour.

The year 2012 has been declared as the NATIONAL YEAR OF MATHEMATICS to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivas Ramanujan. To commemorate the same, the students presented PowerPoint presentations showcasing the relevance of Maths in Science and Computers.

The highlight of the fest was Science and Maths exhibition which showcased experimental, and analytical and reasoning aptitude of the students. The judges and teachers also visited the science park and recycling unit. The world of information and technology explored the untapped talent and versatility of the students, beyond the values of imagination. Various Science and Maths concepts were explained with dexterity and skill by the students through the medium of PowerPoint presentations and models.

The distinguished judges appreciated the laudable efforts of the students encouraging them to develop scientific temper and gain technological knowledge which in turn will enhance universality of all.

The event was a great success highly acknowledged by the judges, participants, teachers as well as the students. The event culminated with the Prize Distribution Ceremony and vote of thanks.


ASTRO CLUB ACTIVITY - HYDRO ROCKET

Young students of Hillwoods Academy got a chance to fly their own rockets, this time not from any launchpad of ISRO but from their own premises and that too with a fuel of water!! Under guidance of SPACE organisation, these students learnt the basics of Rocketry and made their own personal water rockets and flew these few hundred of feet away!!! Hard facts about rocket science were learnt in an easy way by the students. They enjoyed the workshop as they got a hands on experience in doing science in out of classroom situation.
